Mayor Gerald Michael Turning

Tinton Falls

In January 2014, Gerald M. Turning began serving his first term as Mayor of Tinton Falls.  Prior to being elected Mayor, Mr. Turning served four years as the Tinton Falls Borough Administrator upon retiring from 30 years of service to the Tinton Falls Police Department and retiring with the rank of Chief of Police, a position he held from 2004 through 2011.  During his career in law enforcement, Mr. Turning simultaneously served the borough as Director of Emergency Management from 1998 through 2007 and served as a member of the Tinton Falls Planning Board from 2001 through 2005.

Mr. Turning is actively involved in and serves numerous affiliations that have afforded him enhanced experience and knowledge throughout his career.  He is a lifetime member of the Tinton Falls Police Benevolent Association Local 251 and the Tinton Falls Superior Officers Association Local 251.  He is a retired member of the National Chiefs of Police Association, the FBI LEEDS Association and the United States Police Canine Association.  Mr. Turning currently serves as Commissioner of the Monmouth County Regional Health Department #1 as well as a Commissioner of the Monmouth County Joint Insurance Fund.  Along with being a current Board Member of Fort Monmouth FMERA, he is currently the Vice-President of the Tinton Falls Seniors Association, and a member of the Two Rivers Council of Mayors, an organization comprised of 14 Eastern Monmouth County Mayors.

Mr. Turning earned his Associate in Arts Degree with honors in December 1992 at Brookdale Community College, went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration Degree with honors in August from Kean University and proudly accepted his Masters of Administrative Science in May 2002 from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a 3.75 GPA.

On a personal note, Gerald “Jerry” Turning and his wife, Barbara, have been married for 42 years, reside in Tinton Falls, and have two children.  Their son, Gerald M. Turning, Jr., is a Lieutenant with the Tinton Falls Police Department.  A 17-year veteran with the department, Gerald Jr. is married and lives in Tinton Falls with his wife, Jo-Ann.  Their daughter, Michele Swope, lives in Independence, Kentucky and is a District Child Evaluation Specialist for St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, Kentucky.  They have four grandchildren:  Anna 12, Eric 9, Rylee 9 and Andrew 4.
